[TKOSINM] 130 - The Ring’s Abilities

Noel had warned her several times, and just as much, Irene was also prepared. After their official marriage announcement, the timing between now and the wedding would make them sure targets to those who held malice against Noel, or his succession of the Duchy. Even with Noel and Louiselle by her side, she wouldn’t be able to handle every situation. It was foolish to wish for only stability and peace at a time when she had to be most cautious.

As a result, Irene listened carefully to Mulliman’s recount. Mulliman smiled at her. She seemed like a pupil, gleaming with enthusiasm. She could have easily said, ‘I can just skip this.’ In fact, it really was of no use of her to know of such theories. All she had to do was aim and cast. But the future duchess in front of him was brimming with wanting to know even the smallest details. Mulliman liked that appearance of Irene.

Up till that point, all those who had been interested in his works have only tried to use the tools, and not shown a desire to have a holistic understanding, as Irene.

“Okay, now that you’ve seen attack magic, it’s time to look at defense magic. Ryun! Bring it!”

“Yes! Master! I brought it!”

At Mullman's cry, the assistant came back with a large sword this time. What was with the sword, so suddenly? Irene looked between the two of them, puzzled. In the next moment, her eyes widened in shock at the sight that followed.

The assistant suddenly drew the sword and aimed it at Mulliman. The sword was so daunting, that it seemed like it could immediately amputate a limb even with a light swipe. He said that he would show her defensive magic, but she felt bad. Irene felt a little awkward, but she could not rush forward. Mulliman was too calm. 

“Here I come, Master!” His assistant Ryun, yelled loudly raising the sword and charged at Mulliman. The sword was just about to make an impact but still, Mulliman remained motionless. The sword arced, approaching his neck at high speed, when-

‘BANG’. 

Ryun was sent flying. It was as if he had merely bounced off something.

“Ouch...I can’t do this anymore…”

Lying on the floor, Ryun complained to himself. “How is this being an assistant, what am I even doing here” he grumbled, amongst other complaints. But Mulliman ignored his words and proceeded to continue his explanation to Irene.

“This is the defensive magic built into the ring. Similar to the method of attacking, it spreads the stored mana in a circle around you, to form a protective film. Likewise, the greater the amount of condensed mana, the stronger the bubble’s power. Defense consumes a relatively smaller amount of magic power than attacking, so after using attack magic, you can additionally use defensive magic one more time. As you just saw, it is so effective that it can block the attack of a sword.”

Though Mulliman was nonchalant about it, in truth, it was an amazing ability. To be able to attack from afar, and block a strong attack, if it were used well, it could be used in many different situations. Irene was worried whether she could effectively handle the ring, but on the other hand, she was happy she could relieve Noel and Louiselle’s burden. Even if it was a little.

But the abilities of the ring did not end there. 

“Next, there is a tracking function, but this is a function that is more suitable for Noel Kristen. Ryun! Bring it!”

The assistant, who woke up at Mulliman’s call, lept up and brought something new again. This time it was a small box. Mulliman opened the box, and inside was an identical pair of rings.

“This ring is Noel Kristen’s ring, and does not contain as much magic as Miss Irene Chase’s ring. See here…”

After bumping the jewels embedded in the two rings, the assistant took one of the rings and walked away. A small star-like dot appeared on the ring. Surprisingly, the dots were pointing exactly at each other.

“If you’re more than a certain distance apart, the tracking magic will be triggered. Well… it doesn’t make any difference, that’s all. It can be activated even with a very small amount of magic power, so there is nothing to worry about.” 

“How amazing.”

Starting with the iron gate, everything in the tower was amazing. It felt like I was in another world. Seeing Irene briefly exclaim in wonder, Mulliman smiled satisfactorily. He carefully packed Noel’s ring which his assistant was carrying, in the box, and looked at Irene.

Is there anything else left...?

She wondered if it was over now, but it seemed like there was something she hadn’t been shown yet. When Irene faced Mulliman, he closed then opened his mouth.

“I have one last magic left to explain to you two. That’s the magic of ‘imprinting’.”
