Simon shrugged.
“He seems to have taken several cold showers last night, even after soaking in the icy bath.”
Oscar often bathed in freezing water, cold enough to give a weaker man a heart attack. He did this not just to cleanse his body but also to cool the boiling emotions within him. So, the fact that he had showered multiple times meant he was simmering internally.
Simon’s face twisted in concern.
“And there’s an engagement tonight.”
“A reception?”
“No, he’s the guest of honour.”
Barbara clicked her tongue.
“If there’s anything you need to report regarding Count Jerome or the Marquis, wait until tomorrow.”
“Understood, ma’am.”
Barbara passed by Simon, who gave her a small bow.
The office connected to a reception room led into a grand hall. Dressed in a black gown, Barbara quickly descended the sweeping staircase. As she reached the main floor, she saw Abel walking toward the open door for ventilation.
Seo Ah had stopped between the wolf statues at the mansion’s entrance while Abel was making his way up the stairs. Barbara’s figure stood poised behind him.
Abel seemed uncomfortable with the large sum he held. Perhaps it would be better for her to talk to Barbara instead.
Seo Ah took a small breath and averted her gaze from the two. As she did, her eyes landed on the life-sized wolf statues.
A cold breeze blew past the statues, and Seo Ah turned her attention toward the annexe. The expansive garden came into view, and for a brief moment, the chaotic thoughts swirling in her mind receded.
Around the now dormant fountain, mansion staff moved about their tasks. The wind rustled the trees that encircled the mansion, their leaves clattering noisily against each other.
Swoosh, swoosh.
Today, the sound reminded her of the ocean. The thought of the sea brought her back to memories of her grandfather and the quilted clothing he would make for her.
“You’ve grown taller this year, so you’ll need a new coat.”
Even though she rarely had a reason to go out, her grandfather always made sure she had a full set of clothes suitable for any occasion.
“You must stay warm and healthy this winter, understood?”
The warm memory, stirred by the cold wind, briefly thawed the icy self-loathing that gripped her heart.
“Argh!”
A strangled cry came from the direction of the main building. It was a choked sound, like someone being strangled, and it sounded distinctly like Abel.
Seo Ah quickly turned back toward the mansion entrance. However, all she saw was Abel, seemingly fine, walking away from the mansion.
As he turned toward the entrance, Seo Ah noticed something strange. Abel, who had just been crying out in pain and once cursed and snapped at her in frustration, was now smiling—smiling so brightly it was almost terrifying.
A chill ran down her spine. A flurry of thoughts raced through her mind faster than light.
Why is he smiling like that? Is he so shocked by my audacity that he finds it funny?
Abel strode toward her, and Seo Ah, still confused, took a few steps back, stopping at the edge of the garden stairs. Her mind was still tangled with conflicting thoughts.
Is he laughing because it’s absurd? It must be amusing to him—me trying to fix things with money. And not even my own money…
“What did you say you wanted to do earlier?”
Seo Ah looked up at Abel, who was now standing right in front of her, wearing an oddly affectionate expression as he narrowed his eyes. His mood swings were giving her whiplash; first, he was angry, then he was cursing, and now he was suddenly smiling.
“You said you wanted to go to a department store?”
Amidst the grand mansion’s luxurious surroundings, where the sounds of rustling leaves echoed like crashing waves, Abel, the con artist, seemed to have fully embraced his role, even wagging his metaphorical tail. Meanwhile, Seo Ah’s eyes trembled slightly as she took in his sudden change in demeanour.
Department store.
Barbara had reluctantly told her that Abel’s clothes could be easily found at a department store after Seo Ah had insisted on replacing them.
And it seemed that Abel, despite his earlier reactions, was more than happy to accept her offer to buy him new clothes.
