“Are you really curious about the market?”

“I… I just wanted to—”

“Why are you so intent on wandering around these markets? Even the locals here don’t do that. The central market is fine, I can understand that. But the others? Like Pal Phien? What’s so special there?”

“I was thinking—”

“All the goods are the same anyway. What do you hope to find? You don’t even buy anything lately. You haven’t even been eating or buying any trinkets. What market could you possibly want to visit so early in the morning?”

“…to buy clothes.”

Abel, who had been getting more and more agitated, suddenly stopped.

“What?”

Seo Ah blinked her swollen eyes and hesitantly looked up before lowering them again.

“Your clothes got ruined because of me. I wanted to buy you a new suit…”

Abel’s eyes moved to the bag Seo Ah was holding.

While her own clothes, provided by Oscar, were of the finest quality, her bag was as shabby as it could get. That wasn’t all. Abel had noticed that she only ever spent money on what was absolutely necessary, even when she had ample resources.

For a moment, Abel felt stupid for hesitating.

“You plan on buying my suit from the same place you bought that bag?”

“No, not exactly…”

Abel shut his eyes tightly and muttered.

“Forget it. You have no idea how much that suit costs.”

“Would this be enough?”

Abel instinctively paused, and Seo Ah nervously opened her bag with pale fingers, pulling out a piece of paper that Barbara had stamped for her.

“This should cover the cost of the suit he was wearing,” Barbara had said when she gave her the check. The amount written on it was astronomical. The suit looked expensive, but Seo Ah hadn’t expected it to be that costly. She had been reluctant to use the money Oscar provided, but now she felt the weight of the large sum. When she handed the paper to Abel, he snatched it up immediately.

Tick, tick, tick.

The sound of a clock’s second hand seemed to echo in Abel’s mind as he stared at the check. He glanced at Seo Ah and then back at the check.

“Barbara gave you this?”

“Yes.”

Abel turned the check over in his hands, his gaze moving to the left as he counted the digits. Seo Ah, watching him, spoke up cautiously.

“Is it not enough…?”

“What if it’s not?”

If this isn’t enough, then you’ll never know wealth.

“I could ask Mrs. Barbara for more.”

Abel stared at her, then at the check, and back at Seo Ah, his eyes narrowing. He then abruptly turned and started walking toward the main building.

Seo Ah hurried to follow him, speaking in a small voice.

“It’s not stolen.”

“Of course not.”

Abel didn’t mean he trusted Seo Ah. He simply knew that no one could steal from Barbara’s vault. The mansion’s staff watched as Abel marched toward the main building, followed closely by the foreign woman, who struggled to keep up.

Among those watching were Oscar and Barbara.

Looking out, Oscar leaned against the windowsill while Barbara handed him a steaming cup of coffee on a saucer.

“…and so, I couldn’t stop her. It might be better to have her stay in one place rather than wandering around. I’ll triple the backup team and ensure they can avoid the crowds.”

Oscar didn’t remove his hand from his pocket, so Barbara placed the coffee on the table and bowed slightly.

“It seems they’re coming to see you, so I’ll meet them.”

As she left the office that connected to the study, Simon, who was waiting, gave her a nod. Being one of the two closest to Oscar, Barbara immediately issued a quiet warning.

“He’s in a rather foul mood.”
