I now have a permanent schedule for updates. Please don’t ask me for faster updates or when is the next update anymore. I haven’t dropped a series unless I’ve specified in the series’ page. The schedule is posted monthly on Patreon.

Life factors aside, ensuring quality translations is a time-consuming process. I am in part a writer and translator, which is why I do it solely because I like it. It takes me a minimum of three hours per chapter.

There’s a plethora of metaphors, imagery and figurative language which require a historical and cultural understanding of its context. Translating this is hard.

Niko, for example, has fantastic diction which most often only works in Japanese: ‘let them blow bubbles’ would mean in its specific context, ‘let them be so frightened by what they have witnessed that they start frothing at their mouths where it looks like they’re literally blowing bubbles’ spoke in a sadistic tone. This is translated into a euphemistic ‘let them reel in this delight’. Another metaphor in Korean: ‘his head was rolling on the ground’ is a metonymy for ‘he racked his brain’. Sometimes it amuses me, other times my head rolls on the ground attempting to phrase expressions.

If I didn’t spend this time, you would be reading translations like: ‘jousama, it is very bad news! Teges country have broken and attacked!’ instead of ‘Your Majesty, Queen Alana. The country of Teges has rescinded our alliance and turned against us. Without any forewarning, they have managed to ambush…’

I aim to translate the meaning of the words without losing the beauty of the writing and the author’s intent. I constantly ask myself what does textual integrity look like? In doing so, my audience can have a smooth reading experience and appreciate the author’s writing :)
