179 – Does Light Shine in Salantier?
Then Evan spoke with a hint of awkwardness, “We can’t keep it on the low from the royal palace, you know? Even if His Majesty isn’t feeling well, won’t the suppression of technology still remain supported by the royal heir?”
In response, Scarlett answered, “The gentlemen present here will watch over me, I’m sure.”
Her words elicited cheerful laughter from some of the naval officers.
However, Pallin spoke in an anxious tone, “Even so, we can’t guarantee complete safety. Fanatics could still cling to you.”
“Yes, I know that too. But… I believe it’s necessary.”
Viktor lit his cigarette again without saying a word, and Pallin continued to speak to Scarlett, “Furthermore, even if we protect you now, after making a peace treaty, you might end up as a hunted dog that has served its purpose.”
Listening to this, Viktor chimed in, “Just root out the spies and punish them. Then that guy* will be caught then too. After that, there won’t be any reason to consider people evil just because they possess technology.”
*the crown prince
His casual remark left not only the naval officers but also Scarlett astonished. It wasn’t just the lack of honorifics when referring to the crown prince but also the nonchalant way Viktor mentioned capturing and punishing him that surprised her.
Soon, his ever so flexible* RHM, Evan, read the room and responded, “Yes, that should work then. Shall we contact the newspaper immediately?”
*flexible, as in adaptable (not physically flexible, albeit I don’t doubt that 😂)
Upon hearing this, Viktor looked around at the naval officers and said, “Yes, let’s do that.”
“If anyone has opposing opinions, speak up now.”
The individuals sitting at the table shook their heads and responded with one word.
“None.”
“If there are concerns, they’re only about how to protect Miss Scarlett.”
With everyone inside in agreement, Scarlett herself let out a sigh of relief.
Evan swiftly wrote on a piece of paper, folded it, and handed it to one of his attendants, who placed the chair behind the table against the wall and sat down. He passed the message to his attendant, saying, “Take this to the 3rd Street Newspaper. The Capital Newspaper is likely to be censored since it’s connected to the royal family.”
“Yes, understood.”
Taking the note from Evan, the naval officer wrapped it in layers of leather and fastened it with a string before rushing out of the conference room.
Afterwards, she spent some time in the reception room. Since a few naval officers were also waiting there, there was no need for private conversation even though Viktor was sitting across from her.
As the sun began to set, Evan’s attendant, who had gone to the newspaper office, returned. Evan took the newspaper and placed it on the round table in the reception room.
“They printed it straight away at the newspaper office. It will start selling soon.”
Scarlett was amazed by the naval officers’ efficiency and took the newspaper to confirm. On the front page of the 3rd Street Newspaper, known for its political neutrality, there was a headline written in large letters that she had never seen before.
[Does Light Shine in Salantier?]
[The True Heir of the Crimson Family, Lady Scarlett. Embarking on Aircraft Production.]
Evan explained, “The lower part is what I wrote, and the upper part is what the 3rd Street Newspaper added.”
As Scarlett held the newspaper, her body began to tremble. She murmured, “Now, I really have to create it. The aircraft.”
Upon this, Evan spoke, “Honestly, just revealing your name like this is truly courageous.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes. Your name holds more weight than most of the Air Force.”
As Evan spoke, his subordinates next to him wore expressions of injustice. Evan laughed heartily and then turned to Viktor, saying, “Actually, isn’t she in the Air Force now?”
At his question, Viktor spoke up, “Pallin, among the students staying at the vineyard mansion, is there anyone who is disqualified as a maintenance officer?”
Pallin, who had become quite familiar with those students while overseeing them recently, confidently replied, “No.”
“Then I guess we can proceed with the application.”
In response to Evan’s statement, Scarlett answered, “I’ll ask.”
“Yes, please do, Miss Scarlett. Take Pallin with you. He’s the head mechanic.”
Pallin was taken aback by this. He had momentarily forgotten that he was the head mechanic due to his eagerness to follow Viktor to Rubied and his current responsibility. Although he remained at the Rubied Villa with Viktor and held the position of head mechanic, he knew very little about machinery. He entrusted the practical work to the technicians while he handled matters related to weaponry.
Regardless, Viktor had sent Scarlett to the College of Engineering under his protection for matters related to machinery, and that was why Pallin was looking at Scarlett with a supportive gaze.
I fell in love with this book when it was still ongoing and read it during COVID, anticipating each chapter’s release. I’ve been translating this book since 2020! I put a lot of time and effort over the years, hours on end manually translating and typing, and comparing with the original book so that my nuances are right, so that my translations are good (five years coming for TIDK).
Thank you so much for reading!! 💖 If you’re interested in reading ahead, you can support me by tipping me on Ko-fi, or subscribing (over 200+ chapters). I’m a solo translator for about 7 years now, and operate all the projects here by myself. I’ve had ups and downs over the years, and 2025 hit hard (both in my personal and professional life). I’d really appreciate your support—it motivates me! <3
I run this site ad-free, and these translations are kept alive out of my love for reading and sharing quality translations with you. Every bit of support helps with hosting, server, and domain costs. Thank you so much for keeping this project going!
